Encaustic Painting and Collage

This is an introductory workshop looking at the history and basic methods of encaustic art: painting and mark-making with encaustic medium, pigments and paints. You will learn about::
• historical examples of encaustic painting and the emergence of encaustic as a contemporary art form;
• the properties of the wax, resin and pigments used to make encaustic medium and paints;
• the technicalities of the encaustic painting and fusing process;
• surfaces and substrates that can be used and how to prepare and prime them for wax;
• tools, equipment and studio set up;
• health and safety, and safe working practices in the home studio.
Then, through demonstrations by the tutor and your own experiments, you will learn how to:
• Apply and fuse wax medium and wax paints;
• Create smooth wax surfaces;
• Use a variety of brushes, tools and mark-making methods to achieve different effects with encaustic paints;
• Draw and apply colour with various other tools;
• Make effective use of transparency and opacity;
• Add graphic elements with under-drawing and sgraffito;
• Apply colours using powder pigments, inks and oil paints;
• Create pattern and shapes with masks and stencils;
• Add detail with surface impressions and wax drawing;
• Apply antiquing and finishing effects;
• Frame, burnish, and protect encaustic art.

Encaustic 2: Collage with image transfer, photo encaustic and shellac burn - 2 days $350 for tuition plus $30 materials fee. Complimentary snacks and delicious homemade lunch are provided Dates: TBA Please complete the registration form here
Intermediate level - To do this workshop, you must have completed Encaustic Art 101: Colour, Mark-making and Layers, or have prior experience of encaustic painting.
In this workshop, we will consider how you can find your personal voice as an encaustic artist through various ways of adding imagery and depth to your encaustic art. We will look at composition and style, including naturalism, graphic imagery and abstraction in encaustic art. Be prepared to set fire to your work!. In hands-on activities, you will learn to:
• Layer encaustic medium and other media;
• Create encaustic collage with paper and fabric;
• Incorporate drawings and photographs through image transfer;
• Create special effects such as marbling, crackle, organic forms, and cell structures;
• Use shellac burn to create visual texture in naturalistic or abstract encaustic paintings;
• Achieve different colour effects with shellac.

Intermediate level - To do this workshop, you must have completed Encaustic Art 101: Colour, Mark-making and Layers, or have prior experience of encaustic painting.
In this workshop, the focus is on adding texture and dimension to your encaustic art. Experiment with various ways of building textural substrates, and applying, embedding and building materials to create depth, form and structure. As well as wax you will use paper, fabric, fibres, natural materials, and plaster. This exciting workshop will stretch the boundaries of your encaustic art!
In hands-on activities, you will learn to:
• Use stamping, branding and intarsia (inlay) to add detail
• Apply, layer and embed materials and found objects to create texture and depth.
• Add texture and build structure by creating textured substrates
• Use wax carving methods to create relief.
• Build texture with wax using accretion
• Add shimmer, metallics and gold to add highlights or glittering details.
